Coffee tables are not just for books or coffee….

Whenever I have  guests who put their feet up on the coffee table or take naps on the balcony, I know the party was a success!

Here at Chez Sassy, if you lick your plate, ask to bring home left-overs and kick your havaianas off to sit criss-cross on the sofa ,  we take it as the highest compliment.

Have you ever been to people’s homes where everything is so perfect, so fancy-schmancy and stiff that you sit on the edge of the sofa not wanting to make too much noise crunching the crudites?! Or have you ever met a  hostess that hovers around each guest with coasters,  ready to leap into action everytime a guests puts down their glass?

This is the exact opposite of  what I would like to be!

Through the years, J and I have  gone through all sorts of  entertaining  mis-adventures. There was a time when I would put so much effort cooking up elaborate dishes that I’d spend half the time in the kitchen and not enjoy my guests.  Then there was a few years when I didn’t have it in me to unpack the moving boxes and refused to have people over.  Thankfully, I wizened up and realized  that people go to your home to spend time with YOU, not to eat Cordon Bleu dishes. Secondly, how  you make people feel when they are around YOU is more important than what people will think of your stuff! And last, if YOU aren’t having fun, nobody else is having fun!

When J and I were students, we had 23 people over to lunch at our tiny London flat ( everybody brought friends).  The place was so tiny that it didn’t even have a dining room! I improvised by putting cardboard on our wooden futon bedframe, threw a batik bedspread over as a tablecoth,  put pillows all  around it and prayed that it would hold.  A decade later, when we run into our friends from that party, they remember how  everyone stayed to have dinner there too, they remember the food , but whenever I ask: ” Remember how we ate off of our bed? “ No one recalls that!

Our invitations come with encouragements to : ”Wear your comfy clothes and havaianas. Also, bring your kids, your pets, and a big appetite”.

Nowadays, I’ve retired my complicated cookbooks in favor of  simple home fare, but  I CAN guarantee that there will be a comfy sofa to lounge on, a coffee table to put your feet up on, caipirinhas,  cool music, games , a puppy to eat crumbs off the floor, plenty of dessert and absolutely NO COASTERS!

Do you have any favorite entertaining tricks?

XOXO,

sassy
